So my school has this thing called the “Condom Fairy”. You just go to the Student Health website and state your preferences. You can choose male and/or female condoms and weather or not you want lube. Then a few days later an envelope appears in your mailbox free of charge! Also with that cool little note about consent.

Last month the paperwork was was finally signed and complete. I had hereby irrevocably and unconditionally transferred possession of a 15”x20” lightjet digital C-print, framed in a white mat with black molding to the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction. This image was included in the 2012 Juried Show and I was asked to donate the image to their collection. This is pretty darn awesome, regardless of the image.

Why is it especially important? Because this is the image.

This image was originally produced as part of the ”I masturbate…” series -a photographic celebration for National Masturbation Month which consisted of daily photos of people masturbating, accompanied with a statement from them beginning with the words “I masturbate…”.

Why is it important that this image was not only created, but recognized and archived by an Institute dedicated to advancing sexual health and knowledge?

Because a fat body pleasing itself is revolutionary within the context of mainstream US erotic imagery.

Because the neutered and de-sexualized fat aesthetic needs to be challenged in the US.

Because fat bodies are sexual bodies.

Because when we do not see images of people who look like ourselves represented, then we do not feel worthy of being represented, either. We internalize a sense of unworthiness and the self-hate cycle is perpetuated.

Because this image of masturbation as self love was created within an erotic landscape that supports self hate and it should serve to chip away at that erotic landscape and made it wider, more inclusive.

Help produce the “I masturbate…” exhibition for the Center for Sex and Culture in San Francisco.

“In this cult of female martyrdom, where caring for our own well being is always last on our to-do list, it is easy to feel selfish when we do care for ourselves. But being kind to yourself, banishing negative body-talk, taking necessary time away from work, feeding your body with food that makes it happy, taking a morning for spiritual growth, doing one activity you enjoy just because you enjoy it—these things are not selfish! For so long, women have been socialized around the idea of “guilty pleasures”. Female pleasure–whether it is related to sex, food, or even an activity–must be categorized into “good” and “bad” categories. We are taught to feel “guilty” for “indulging,” but often these indulgences are normal, healthy expressions of desire. Common guilty pleasures include: food seen as “bad,” like cake, French fries, or chocolate; reading an erotic romance novel; skipping the gym to watch Netflix in bed; taking a bubble bath to decompress rather than tackling your mountain of homework. These guilty pleasures are fairly normal activities. For women, things that we enjoy doing are labeled “indulgence,” and we chastise ourselves for being “bad” if we do them. Indulgence sounds dirty, but most of our “guilty pleasure indulgences” are simply acts self-care. Self-care is not bad. Self-care is not selfish. Our lives do not have to follow the script of obedience.”

Last May, The Sex Positive Photo Project went on a mission to celebrate masturbation during the month of May. Each day there was a new photo of a person masturbating along with their own narrative.
